1st child liver transplant in the BX performed

Doctors at Montefiore Medical Center are celebrating the first liver transplant on a child in the Bronx.

The procedure was performed last month on 11-month-old Jeremiah Velez, who doctors say is doing well. Jermiah's mother, Nadia Brooks, says her son was born with biliary atresia, a potentially fatal condition that destroys the liver.

Doctors at Montefiore plan to perform more child liver transplants in the future and ultimately hope to build up to about 20 procedures each year.

To watch an interview with Nadia Brooks, the mother of 11-month-old Jeremiah Velez, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select iO Extra.
