Sen. Espada rejects Cuomo claim of sham program

New York Sen. Pedro Espada calls the latestlawsuit filed against him by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo afurther attempt at "political assassination" and Espada deniesrunning a sham job training program.

In a suit yesterday, Cuomo says the Bronx Democrat and his sonPedro G. Espada are violating labor laws and shortchanging workersthrough the training program at their Bronx health centers.

Cuomo says janitorial workers are mislabeled as trainees, whoget little training and are paid less than the law requires, someabout $1.70 an hour. He says at least 100 workers have beenvictimized since 2005.

Espada says the two-week training program pays a stipend, andsome workers move up to earn good wages.
