Bloomberg asks for special ed. overhaul
Mayor Michael Bloomberg is asking for an overhaul in the city?s school system by placing special needs students within mainstream classrooms.
More than 250 schools will be asked to accept students with learning disabilities into regular classrooms this fall. By the following school year, principals will be asked to accept all but severely disabled special needs students.
The shift has already been working in other schools around the nation. Some say it gives special needs students the benefits of a regular classroom.
However, critics say the changes could be difficult for those not trained to deal with special needs children.
