Thousands protest AZ immigration law at NYC rally

(AP) - Thousands of union members and immigrant rightsactivists are rallying in New York City to protest Arizona'scontroversial new immigration law.

The May Day demonstration filled Manhattan's Foley Square withlaborers from New York's immigrant-rich work force who are upsetabout the law, which requires police to routinely question peopleabout their immigration status.

One construction worker from Ecuador said he believed that itwould lead to crackdowns on good people, singled out only becauseof the color of their skin.

Another laborer who came from Honduras 20 years ago said itwould make life harder for all immigrants, even those here legally.

Supporters of the law say something needs to be done aboutviolence related to illicit border crossings and drug smuggling.
