MTA may be thrown lifeline from federal governmentPosted: Updated:
Several U.S. senators could make it possible to keep bus lines throughout the Bronx operating.
A new bill that has the support of seven Democratic senators, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), would give $2 billion to transit systems in New York and other big cities across the country. The MTA could then use that money to avoid looming cuts to workers, buses and subways.
The MTA is still trying to find ways to get another $400 million despite making cuts to many lines, including the number 25 and 14 bus lines, and to booth workers at many subway stations.
In a statement, the MTA says it?s supportive of the bill and hopes it passes.
