Bus carrying kids catches fire on Cross Bronx Extension

All southbound lanes and two northbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway Extension were closed at Randall Avenue earlier tonight after a bus carrying children caught fire.

According to the fire chief, the bus driver smelled smoke and immediately evacuated the kids onto the shoulder before the bus burst into flames. Officials say the fire was extinguished and crews removed the vehicle from the scene.

The children are part of a church group from Long Island. They were traveling home from a trip to Pennsylvania during the incident.

None of the children were hurt, but one firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
