GOP chooses Lazio to run for NY governor: Levy fails primary

(AP) New York Republicans have chosen formerCongressman Rick Lazio as their candidate forgovernor.

The party endorsed the Long Islander on Wednesday at itsconvention in New York City.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy sought to force a GOPprimary, but lost his chance. Levy is a Democrat who wants to runas a Republican. He needed more than 50 percent of the votes in asecond ballot at the party's convention, but mustered just lessthan 43 percent.

Lazio served in Congress from 1993 to 2001 and lost to HillaryRodham Clinton in the U.S. Senate election in 2000.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is running for governor for theDemocrats.
