World Cup fever heats up in the Bronx
World Cup fever is strong in the Bronx as fans gathered in bars and homes across the borough to watch the kickoff game between host nation South Africa and Mexico.
Mexican-Americans in the Bronx cheered on their home team at local restaurants and bars. Restaurant and bar owners say they expect the crowds to pick up even more throughout the tournament.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a reception to kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup and declared June 11 World Cup Day in New York City.
The World Cup continues until July 11. The kickoff game ended in a 1-1 tie.
