Legislators approve tobacco tax hike

State legislators approved another emergency spending bill after the budget remains more than two months late.

In the bill, legislators decided to approve a cigarette tax. Cigarette taxes increased by $1.60 per pack and now give New York the highest cigarette tax in the country. The plan also included a tax increase for chewing tobacco, cigars and other tobacco products.

The package is expected to raise approximately $440 million to try and offset a $9.2-billion deficit.

A total of 70 percent of the budget that was due on April 1 has been completed with the passing of this latest emergency spending bill.
