JFK airport's main runway reopens

(AP) - The main runway at New York's John F. KennedyInternational is reopening after four months of repairs.

It officially reopened today at an 11 a.m. ceremony. It hasbeen repaved with concrete instead of less-durable asphalt andwidened to accommodate bigger planes.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages thethree main New York area airports, says the massive constructionproject ended within its $376 million budget.

Before it closed, JFK's Bay runway handled one-third of all theairport's takeoffs and landings. The runway is one of the longestcommercial runways in the world.
