Assemblywoman's aide arrested in robbery
(AP) - An aide to state Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo wasarrested Wednesday on charges of robbery and impersonating a policeofficer, accused of flashing a fake badge and stealing $4,000 froman apartment, police said.
Wilfredo Nazario, 31, was awaiting arraignment and there was nophone number listed at his address. After-hours calls to theassemblywoman's Bronx and Albany offices were not immediatelyreturned.
Police said Nazario and an accomplice flashed a badge and aweapon to get into an apartment in the Bronx, telling the tworesidents they were police, breaking into a locked room andstealing the money, which the father of one of the residents hadsaved to buy a car.
The accomplice was still at large. Police say the apartment wastargeted because Arroyo somehow heard there was cash there.
The victim picked Nazario out of a lineup that included his mugshot because he had been arrested May 25 after a traffic stop.Police said when he was stopped they noticed he had an NYPDdetective-like shield that read "assemblyman" and otherpolice-like equipment in his car.
In March, Arroyo's grandson Richard Izquierdo-Arroyo pleadedguilty to charges he embezzled $115,000 from a taxpayer-fundednonprofit group, then shared some of the ill-gotten gains with hislawmaking kin, which included City Council member Maria del CarmenArroyo.
Neither lawmaker has been charged.
