Apartment complex for seniors to get $2M for renovations
It's monumental news for senior citizens who live in the historic Findlay-Teller apartment complex.
The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York has awarded the complex a $2-million grant to renovate 163 studio and one-bedroom apartments.
Officials say the complex's previous owners let the building fall into complete disrepair. The low-income seniors who live there say they have coped with mold, leaky pipes, outdated appliances and wall cracks for years.
In addition to renovations, the grant money will be put toward senior-specific features such as emergency pull cords and shower bars.
Residents say that since the complex was taken over by the Belmont-Arthur Avenue Local Development Corporation, conditions have improved. The new landlords say they?re still waiting for an additional $15 million to complete the renovations.
