Rigger acquitted in 2008 NYC crane collapse
(AP) - A construction crane rigger has been acquitted of all criminal charges stemming from a New York City cranecollapse that killed seven people.
A judge delivered the verdict Thursday in William Rapetti'strial on manslaughter and other charges. Rapetti was the onlyperson to face criminal charges in the March 2008 disaster inmidtown Manhattan.
Prosecutors say Rapetti did a recklessly inadequate job ofsecuring the nearly 200-foot crane as it was being extended upward.
Rapetti's lawyer said that the rigger did his work carefully, but that the crane was unsteady because of engineering decisionsand shoddy welding that weren't Rapetti's responsibility.
Rapetti declined a jury.
