New bridge made upstate arrives on barges in NYC
(AP) - A 350-foot-long replacement bridge for the Willis Avenue Bridge has arrived in New York City aboard two barges.
The barges with the 2,400-ton swing bridge passed under theBrooklyn Bridge Monday morning.
The bridge is replacing the existing 109-year-old span thatconnects Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx.
The bridge was constructed at an Albany-area port. It wastransported last week to Bayonne, N.J.
It's expected to arrive at its new site, just south of theexisting bridge on the Harlem River later Monday morning.
Installation of the new bridge is scheduled to begin Aug. 2.
Removal of the existing span is set for Sept. 20.
