Families claim they were kicked out of Powers Avenue shelter

(07/26/10) THE BRONX - Dozens of Bronx families may be forced to sleep on the streets tonight after they say a homeless shelter has denied them temporary housing.

Families took to the streets to protest in front of the homeless shelter on Powers Avenue. The protesters claim they have been forced to live under unsanitary conditions at the shelter, citing rat and roach infestation and mold. They also say that they are fed like wild animals and are often given rotten or spoiled food.

Now the families say the shelter has denied them temporary housing and said the staff told them to stay with their families or live out on the street.
