Report: Orchard Beach water quality poor

A new report examining the water quality of one of the Bronx's most popular beaches shows the area may not be safe for swimmers.

The Natural Resources Defense Council's annual report gave Orchard Beach just one out of five stars. The statement says the beach failed to meet water quality health standards, but the city's Department of Health disagrees.

The department says it tests the water quality at least once a week and says that Orchard Beach was fully acceptable 97 percent of the time.

According to the report, city beaches are contaminated by storm water runoff and sewage.
