BX residents protest AZ immigration law
Protesters clashed in Manhattan this afternoon over Arizona's new immigration law, which went into effect today.
A U.S. judge put a temporary injunction on the SB 1070 law, which put several key provisions on hold. One required immigrants to carry documentation at all times, and the other allowed police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspected was illegal.
Thousands called for widespread immigration reform, marching across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. Some Bronx residents with immigrant relatives say the injunction was a step in the right direction.
Counter-protesters who support the law say those who are in the country legally are ultimately paying the price.
