City Council speaker wages fight against bed bugs

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-District 3) is starting up a war against bed bugs.

City officials are recommending that a "bed bug czar" be hired to help combat the increasing problem. The city fielded 11,000 bed bug complaints in 2009, up from 537 in 2004. Quinn has already passed a law to create the Bed Bug Advisory Board.

Officials are telling residents they should cooperate with exterminators and stop buying used furniture to avoid bed bugs.
