Many BX residents question origin of droopy drawers

Even after a federal judge ruled that sagging pants below the waist and exposing underwear is not a crime or against the law, most Bronx residents say they are still unaware of how the style was started.

Experts say the look came from the prison system. They say guards refused to give belts to inmates, especially sexual abuse victims, who might have tried to kill themselves or harm others.

Those who oppose the style say following a fashion started in jail sends a negative message to local children.
