Rebuild begins on bridge over I-95

Bronx residents say they are elated construction has begun on a popular pedestrian bridge over Interstate 95 that was knocked down nearly two years ago.

The state Department of Transportation has started construction to replace the walkway near Waterbury Avenue. A sign at the work site says the walkway area will be closed until Sept. 7.

The bridge was damaged in August 2008 when a loaded dump truck struck the bridge on the southbound side.
