Livery cab company: Driver in bus stop crash has clean record
(08/10/10) THE BRONX - The boss of the livery cab driver who police say crashed into people waiting at a Bronx bus stop today as he tried to avoid an accident says the driver has a clean driving record. The president of First Class Car Service identified the driver as Pedro Marte and said he has been driving for the company for five years. Fernando Mateo, of the Federation of Taxi Cab Drivers, says Marte was on the way to pick up a passenger at Lehman College at the time of the accident. Mateo says the driver was not aware a man was killed in the accident and that Marte broke down when learning the news. Marte was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and later released. A woman was brought to the hospital with a crushed leg and another woman was taken to St. Barnabus Hospital with a severed foot. Four other people taken to area hospitals are expected to be OK.
Police do not expect to file charges against Marte, or the driver of the minivan they say was making an illegal U-turn.
