Voters to consider term limits on Nov. ballot
(08/12/10) NEW YORK (AP) - New Yorkers will have the chance this fall todecide whether elected city officials should be limited to two orthree consecutive terms.
A panel charged with reviewing the city's laws decided today toput a question about term limits on the ballot.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg persuaded the City Council to extend theterm-limits law to three terms in 2008.
He needed it done quickly so he could run for a third term lastyear, and promised at the time he would appoint a commission toreview the law further and possibly put it to voters.
The panel began its work in March and held hearings all over thecity.
Voters twice upheld a two-term limit in the 1990s.
