NYC to get 1,500 new countdown traffic signals

(08/16/10) THE BRONX - The Department of Transportation expects to install new pedestrian countdown signal signs across the Bronx.

The signs count down from when the yellow-flashing hand will turn red, so that pedestrians can better estimate if they will make it across the street before cars get a green light.

The signals are a part of a pedestrian safety study being performed by the DOT. After studying the signals for a year, experts have determined that they can significantly reduce traffic fatalities.

The city says it hopes to cut the number of 2007 fatalities in half by 2030.
