Bronx camp open for kids with diabetes

A special summer camp in the Bronx is catering exclusively to children suffering from diabetes.

Camp "Cham" is in its 17th year and is funded entirely by donations. Montefiore Medical Center provides and pays for the camp's medical staff.

"When they come here and see all the kids have diabetes, they say, 'I'm not alone,'" says Leonor Ponte, the camp's medical director.

After a few hours of swimming in the pool, the campers get their blood sugar checked and, if needed, get insulin injections. Then the kids have a snack to regulate their blood sugar.

The children learn about healthy eating, counting carbohydrates and taking care of themselves through games.
