Officials visit Pelham Parkway, explain tree-removal plan

(08/27/10) THE BRONX - New York City officials visited the Pelham Parkway today to explain the reasons behind their plan to remove its historic trees.

The officials went through and pointed out rotting trees that they insist need to be removed. They also explained that many healthy trees will need to be removed to make room for guardrails.

One official explained the guardrails are designed to bend inward, so when they are impacted by cars they will absorb the shock. It would require two feet of empty space between the tree line and the curb.

Officials say they will measure every tree to ensure that no tree is removed unnecessarily.
