BX residents call for safer intersection after hit-and-run of child
(08/30/10) THE BRONX - Bronx residents are demanding safety improvements for an intersection on 214th Street after a child was struck in a hit-and-run accident. Cops say 5-year-old Joshua Saunders ran into the street to chase a ball Saturday when a Nissan Pathfinder struck him and dragged him more than 50 feet down the road.
One resident thinks speed bumps would deter drivers from flying down the street, while another thinks the resurrection of a neighborhood block association would give children activities outside of playing in the street.
Hattie Johnson and a group of retirees have spearheaded the idea with an after-school and outreach program that teaches kids arts and crafts and helps with homework after school.
Residents say they want to do whatever they can to make sure nothing like this happens again.
