Hip-hop birthplace tenants hope to catch break

A famous Bronx building known as the "birthplace of hip-hop" could soon have a new owner who tenants hope will follow through on much-needed repairs.

Tenants say 1520 Sedgwick Ave. has essentially fallen apart because of ownership negligence, with four different management companies running the building in the past year.

The origins of hip-hop are said to trace back to 1520 Sedgwick Ave. and one tenant in particular, DJ Kool Herc, who played parties in the building's recreation room and developed "the break," an essential component of the genre.
