Jews celebrate first day of 5771st new year

A blast of a shofar announced the arrival of Rosh Hashanah at the Temple Beth-El on City Island.

Jews throughout the Bronx observed Rosh Hashanah yesterday, the first day of Tishrei, a seventh month of the Hebrew lunar calendar.

Rosh Hashanah represents the start of Jewish High Holidays, which include Yom Kippur, a day of atonement; Sukkot, a nine-day festival of booths; and Simchat Torah, a celebration of the annual cycle of weekly Torah readings.
