Police: Same man suspected in 7 BX bank robberies

(09/14/10) EAST TREMONT - Police say the same person is responsible for seven bank robberies that have taken place recently in the Bronx.

Police say the robbery of a Tremont Avenue bank is the man?s most daring crime yet. They say Mercelino Velasquez, 47, entered the Chase Bank and demanded cash while displaying the butt of a firearm in his waistband. He fled the scene after the tellers gave him money.

Officials say the Tremont Avenue robbery is the only holdup in which a weapon was involved. Police say that Velasquez is responsible for seven robberies.

Police describe Velasquez as 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds.
