BX teacher allegedly tried to sell illegal guns

(09/15/10) THE BRONX - A New York City public school teacher was in Bronx Supreme Court today after he was arrested for allegedly trying to sell guns to what he believed were Middle East terrorist groups and trafficking in untaxed cigarettes.

Theophilis Burroughs, 49, of Newark, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty to criminal selling of firearms in the first degree, conspiracy and other related charges. Burroughs' lawyer, Michael D'Ambrozio, says there is a lack of evidence that his client committed the alleged crimes in New York. Authorities say they have audio and video of Burroughs discussing with undercover informants where the weapons would go. They also claim to have evidence that he bought millions of dollars worth of untaxed cigarettes from the informants.

The district attorney?s office says that when Burroughs' New Jersey home was raided by police, they found other weapons, controlled substances and more than $73,000 in cash.

Burroughs' is remanded until Nov. 18 and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
