State unemployment rate up slightly in August

(AP) - New York state's unemployment rate rose to8.3 percent in August, up from 8.2 percent in July. The stateeconomy added 2,500 private sector jobs.

The state labor department says New York City's jobless rate was9.4 percent. That was unchanged from July and down from 10.1percent in August 2009. The latest figures show the number ofunemployed New Yorkers climbed to 801,400 -- an increase of morethan 5,000 from July.
