Real-time security cameras link subway hubs

(AP) - About 500 cameras installed in New York City'sbusiest transit hubs are now feeding real-time images to the NYPD'ssecurity network.

The transit cameras installed in Pennsylvania Station, TimesSquare and Grand Central station will be used to search forsuspicious activity and prevent terrorist attacks as well as subwaycrime.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the cameras provide the policedepartment with better tools to keep transit riders safe.

The latest feeds are part of the NYPD's lower and midtownManhattan security initiatives. The network of public and privatecameras will eventually grow to about 3,000. Police monitor thefeeds at the headquarters located near Wall Street.
