Sting operation finds 54 unlivable apartments in NYC

(09/23/10) THE BRONX - A massive sting operation has revealed that some landlords in the Bronx and the rest of the city are illegally dividing apartments.

The Department of Buildings found 62 apartments online, inspected them and discovered 54 of them were unlivable. Six of the apartments were located in the Bronx.

An undercover investigator for the city posed as a potential renter and took hidden-camera video of one of the illegally divided apartments. During the citywide sting operation, investigators say they found shoddy electrical wiring and apartments without windows. They say they also issued vacate orders at the most dangerous rentals.

A total of 104 violations were issued to property owners, ranging from $6,000 to $25,000.
