Neighbors sound horn for traffic light, stop sign on Havemeyer Ave.

(09/27/10) UNIONPORT - Residents are calling for a traffic light or stop signs at Havemeyer Avenue in Unionport after a car was totaled there today in an accident.

Neighbors say it isn't the first accident in recent months and they are blaming a lack of stop signs for creating a dangerous intersection. One witness says today's accident happened after a car was T-boned by a mail truck. Ruben Tipia, one of the occupants of the totaled vehicle, says he and his friend were stopped at a stop sign, but had to inch up to see past cars that were parked on the side of the street. He says that's when a mail truck, which did not have a stop sign, crashed into him, totaling his vehicle.

Officials from the Department of Transportation say they are looking into the situation.
