Broken school elevator keeps boy in wheelchair from class

The mother of a young Bronx boy says her son hasn't been able to go to school this year because of a broken elevator at P.S. 157.

According to Debbie McRae, her son Jasper is in a wheelchair after having surgery and can't get to his classroom on the third floor. She says she's worried that the schooling he receives at home isn't enough.

The city's Department of Buildings issued a violation for the elevator on Aug. 3, but it still hasn't been reopened. The Department of Education says the elevator is fixed, but it is waiting for a certificate of inspection.

Jasper is expected to return to school on Friday and see how he manages with crutches.
