Women turn to martial arts for protection

A mixed martial arts teacher in the Bronx is making it his goal to arm women with self-defense skills.

Steve Monroig says he was inspired to help women because of his own mother's story.

"I grew up in a battered environment when I was coming up," Monroig says. "My mother got stabbed 24 times by an ice pick and when I got my black belt, I swore that I would create a program that would be basically for women."

Monroig also plans to begin teaching a self-defense class for elderly Bronx residents starting in December.
