Water main break damages homes, businesses

Several homes and businesses on Allerton Avenue are cleaning up tonight after a water main break this morning.

The Department of Environmental Protection says an 8-inch water main broke, flooding two blocks on Allerton Avenue and White Plains Road. Workers say it took nearly eight hours to cap the water.

The owner of Allerton Hardware and Paint says $12,000 worth of merchandise had just been delivered, but is now under 4 feet of water. A beauty shop, Mexican restaurant and grocery store also suffered damage.

Con Edison worked to make sure the gas lines were not affected while the fire department used its equipment to pump out the water.

The city says the pipes were built in the 1970s and that normal wear and tear could have caused the break.
