16 corrections officers hurt during 2 fights at Rikers Island

Department of Corrections officials say 16 corrections officers were injured during two fights at Rikers Island tonight.

According to officials, the fights broke out among inmates at around 6:30 p.m. They say the officers were attacked when they tried to break up the fights.

The officers were taken to Booth Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say the jail is now under control.
