Suspect in alleged anti-gay gang assault arraigned

One of the seven suspects in the alleged anti-gay hate crime attack that occurred in the Bronx in October appeared in court today.

Prosecutors say Ruddy Vargas-Perez, 23, was arraigned on charges of assault, gang assault, robbery and sexual abuse.

The arraignment came one day after court documents revealed that two suspects who had originally been arrested were actually victims.

Police say Vargas and six other men attacked and abused two teens and a man in a University Heights house back in October. The suspects are accused of torturing and sodomizing their victims because they believed they were gay.
