City pushes for 20 mph limit on some Bronx streetsPosted: Updated:
A city Department of Transportation pilot program could have Bronx drivers slamming their brakes next year for a new speed limit of 20 miles an hour on some local streets.
The DOT announced its plan for a 2011 pilot program this fall after releasing a sweeping pedestrian safety study. The study found pedestrians accounted for 52 percent of traffic deaths from 2005 to 2009, and pedestrian-vehicle crashes are twice as deadly when speeding is involved.
City Councilman James Vacca, chairman of the Council's transportation committee, is asking the pilot program begin in the Bronx.
