Lawmaker eyes harsher penalties for sale of alcoholic energy drinks

A local lawmaker and a Bronx beer distributor have teamed up to fight the rush of residents trying to get their hands on banned alcohol-based energy drinks.

State Sen. Jeff Klein (D-Bronx) says there are some retailers still selling the drinks and that he has sent letters to eBay and Craigslist to remove ads for the drinks by people trying to resell them. He also is calling for harsher criminal penalties for those caught selling or distributing the drinks to anyone under the age of 21.

The largest beer distributor in the tri-state area says it plans to destroy more than $350,000 worth of Joose, one of the banned drinks, by shipping them to a recycling plant.
