Blizzard drops 20 inches of snow on the Bronx

The blizzard that hit the Bronx forced local residents to dig themselves out from underneath a blanket of snow.

Meteorologists say the storm officially dropped 20 inches of snow on the Bronx, making it the fifth-largest snowstorm since 1869.

The high winds caused high snow drifts making it difficult to get roads and sidewalks back to normal.

Bus service is also resuming on a limited basis throughout the borough but things are not expected to return to normal for quite a while.

Earlier in the day, the holiday blizzard made once-bustling Bronx streets appear almost desolate, as plow-equipped trucks inherited the streets with most drivers trying to stay off the roads, if possible.

But as one local resident said, he must go to work and had no choice but to brave the conditions.
