Housing facility opens in BX for low-income vets

The city's first counseling and housing facility for low-income veterans opened its doors to tenants in The Bronx today.

Fordham Village is the first phase of the Jericho Project, which aims to help United States military veterans who are homeless or considered at-risk. All living units come fully furnished, with a bed, dishes and cooking utensils.

The more than 50 new tenants will be responsible for a portion of the rent and will have access to outreach services, including job-placement experts and social workers to help them get back on their feet.

The village was made possible with help from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, along with state aid and private donors. Another center is expected to open in Kingsbridge on Veterans Day and is still accepting applications.
