Soundview girl recovering after being shot in stomach

A 5-year-old Soundview girl is still fighting for her life after she was caught in what police believe was gang gunfire last Friday.

The girl, Darlene Urena, was outside with her mother when shots rang out. A bullet pierced her stomach and came out her back, destroying some of her organs. Doctors performed emergency surgery at Jacobi Medical Center.

Police say they believe two Hispanic men shot into a crowd on Morrison Avenue from across the street. The shots also sent a 15-year-old and 24-year-old to the hospital.

Police speculate that the 24-year-old was the intended target. They say the incident was likely gang-related.

"She's caring, a peaceful person toward everyone," Maximo Urena, the girl's father, said through a translator. "I want the authorities to punish this behavior."

Authorities are offering a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
