Special blood drive being held for injured firefighter
The FDNY is working to help firefighter Robert Wiedmann recover from serious burns he received while battling a Brooklyn fire last week.
The FDNY said people can donate blood for Wiedmann at the New York Blood Center using the patient ID ?59 and file ?4 or calling 1-800-439-6876 for more information.
Officials say Wiedmann was burned over more than 50 percent of his body last Monday. He and firefighter James Gersbeck were searching through smoke for victims in the front room of the top floor of a brownstone, when suddenly the fast moving flames reached them.
Both were rushed to Cornell's burn unit. Fire officials say Wiedmann will need several operations over the next six to eight weeks.
