BX birthplace of hip-hop now under new managementPosted: Updated:
A building on Sedgwick Avenue known as the birthplace of hip-hop has fallen into disrepair over the past couple of years, but it has been sold to a new owner who has promised to revitalize the iconic site.
DJ Eddie Swift says 1520 Sedgwick Ave. was one of the places where hip-hop started with performers such as Kool Herc.
After the building's previous owner let it fall to shambles, the group Workforce Housing Advisors bought it at auction, a move that was welcomed by the tenants who say they have been living in deplorable conditions.
The new management now plans to install a working boiler room and beef up security so that tenants could feel safer.
Longtime tenants such as Geraldine Davis are confident the new building owners will come through.
