Okapi calf makes debut at Bronx ZooPosted: Updated:
The Bronx Zoo is celebrating a new addition to its animal family in the form of an okapi calf.
The giraffe-like animal with zebra stripes was born in June, but made its debut at the zoo in October.
The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the Bronx Zoo, says it takes a lot of time and patience to get the okapis to breed. The animal's gestation period is about 14-and-a-half months.
Zookeepers say the young okapi will be on display a short time during the first several weeks so that it can get used to the new surroundings.
