BX parents worried as possible school bus strike looms

Posted: Updated:

Bronx parents are voicing their concerns as a school bus driver strike looms over the city. The bus drivers' union, Local 1181, is calling for an employee protection provision in their new contract that will guarantee workers' seniority rights. However, some parents say their children should not become involved with labor negotiations. "My daughter, she's pregnant," says Carmen Torres. "She's got two other children, so I don't know what she's going to do about that one. And I definitely cannot take him." Department of Education officials say they will try to block the strike in federal court. In the meantime, students will receive MetroCards and parents will receive reimbursements for all necessary taxi rides. Local leaders say the strike may start as soon as Monday. For video of Mayor Bloomberg's speech on the potential bus strike, select iO Extra on Channel 612.Education Dept. offers transportation options as bus strike loomsChancellor Wallcott's letter to parents
