Thousands rally for fair wages legislation

Posted: Updated:

The fight for a living wage continues as Bronx residents joined thousands for a rally in Manhattan yesterday to support the newly modified Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act.

The legislation, which is also backed by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, requires companies that receive $1 million or more in city subsidies to pay workers $10 per hour.

The bill would also require employees to receive benefits or an increase in pay of $11.50 per hour; however, opponents argue that it would drive businesses out of the city.

A City Council hearing on the modified bill is scheduled for later today.
