Number of hungry BX residents on the rise

The number of Bronx residents who will be hungry this Thanksgiving holiday is on the rise.

According to the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, food pantries and soup kitchens here are struggling to meet the growing demand.

Ninety-one percent of agencies surveyed said that they saw more people coming to them for help with food.

An even more disturbing fact is that 48 percent of the agencies are seeing more families with children at their doors.

To make matters worse, 97 percent of food pantries and kitchens say they're being forced to cut down on the aid they give.

They say they are turning people away, cutting portion sizes or cutting hours of operation.
